#grownlocallyUoS - Environmental Monitoring Solutions

Environmental Monitoring Solutions are based just outside the city centre of Sheffield and work with clients to ensure their goals for environmental regulation, training and legislation are met. They work with a wealth of companies from a variety of industries including manufacturing, construction and education.

Currently they employ around 25 people but are growing at about 20% year on year and will take on a total of eight new staff this year, employing people from skilled manual work up to PhD level. Why do they base themselves in Sheffield? “Sheffield's a good place to do business; it's central, has good connectivity to many parts of the UK (we work all over the UK) and has good sources of talent from the Universities.”

In 2015 Environmental Monitoring Solutions contacted the Careers Service’s Student Jobshop and advertised a part-time temporary vacancy for a Data Analyst. “In terms of the Careers Service, it's efficient and we got a lot of good quality applicants. A fairly high proportion of our staff have studied at the University of Sheffield and we find recruiting from the University has fulfilled staffing and expertise requirements. We are currently sourcing a Technical Support Engineer via the RISE initiative.”

RISE is a major initiative running across the whole city region which aims to increase graduate employment in small and medium sized enterprises by connecting regional innovative businesses to the city’s graduates. It is a collaboration between The University of Sheffield, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield City Region (in particular, the Growth Hub and local authorities) and the private sector.

Sarah Vance, who co-ordinates the RISE initiative on behalf of the Careers Service, says “RISE is a fantastic scheme. We are supporting innovative, local SMEs to achieve their business goals by connecting them to high calibre graduate talent, giving them the confidence and experience to compete in the graduate market. We are also offering talented graduates brilliant opportunities to kick start their careers with organisations they might not have been aware of.”

As well as recruiting our graduates, the company are strengthening their links with the University through final year undergraduate projects and key research initiatives. These include an Innovate UK funded project looking at delivering a step change in nutrient and pesticide monitoring (Dr Maria Romero-Gonzales, www.em-solutions.co.uk/innovation/multimems), and an EU Horizon 2020 project looking at cost effective neural techniques for the alleviation of urban flood risk (Prof Simon Tait, www.em-solutions.co.uk/innovation/centaur).
